THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR - Litha - Summer Solstice

Southern Hemisphere - Dec. 20th/21st

Northern Hemisphere - June 20th/21st

The pinnacle of Summer, Litha or Summer Solstice, celebrates light & abundance. The Sun is at it's peak and we mark the longest day & shortest night of the year.

Litha, often known as Midsummer, sits opposite Yule on The Wheel of the Year, and while the Winter Solstice celebrates a time to rest, go within and honours death, renewal & hope, the Summer Solstice embraces life in all its glory, abundant and full of joy, creativity, pleasure & focusing our energy outwards!

Litha honours growth, transformation & the Goddess in her fullness as Mother/Creator.

Traditionally, Litha is a celebrated with feasting, bonfires, & gatherings. As the ruling element is Fire, Celtic & European traditions call for bonfires, however, here in Australia, the risk of bushfires is high at this time so it is usually illegal to light fires, check with your local fire authorities before celebrating this way. There are many other wonderful ways to celebrate this Solstice, see below for fire-free activities!

It is also a time to honour the Fae, Guardians of Nature, so leave offerings or create a fairy garden, welcoming them into your space. Even a walk in Nature is a great way to connect with this realm.

CELEBRATE LITHA BY DECORATING YOUR SPACE WITH -

  • Golds, Greens, Orange, Yellow, Red, White

  • Sunflowers, Roses, Calendula, - any Summer flowers really!!

  • Bees, Butterflies, Horses, Seahorse, Sea Creatures, Wrens, Hawks, Eagles

  • Sun symbols, Fire symbols, Fairies, Spirals, Seashells, Sacred Well, Cauldron

  • Crystals - Citrine, Carnelian, Sunstone, Tigers Eye, Jade, Diamond, Amber.

RITUALS & ACTIVITIES FOR THIS TIME -

  • Make a flower crown!

  • Create a fairy garden

  • Go strawberry picking

  • Have a bbq, picnic or garden party, with friends & family

  • Soak up some sun, express gratitude for the light & abundance

  • Light candles and make your own solar cross, sun catcher or protective amulets.

  • Litha is the perfect time to focus your energy on abundance, empowerment, fertility, growth, health, healing, love, creativity & success spellwork. Also, anything involving masculine & solar energy.

  • Honour Sun and Fire deities - there are so many! - do some research and be guided by your intuition - also honour the Goddess in her Mother/Creator aspect.

Above all, celebrate LIFE!!

Sending blessings & love at Litha! May you find joy & abundance in all you do!
